Candy and Cigarettes

Tony and I are back from our adventure in Taiwan. We were surprised by a sneak attack wedding banquet. I had to go rent a wedding dress thirty minutes before the big shindig. I picked the prettiest dress in all of Meinong and got a matching wrap, necklace, gloves, and conical boobie pads. I felt like a big honking foreigner because they had to quickly alter the dress to fit my huge frame.

Once we got to the banquet, Tony and I were lead this way and that, not really understanding what was going on. It was good times, for sure. Lots of food, singing, and toasting. We had to say goodbye to everyone as they left and offer candy and cigarettes for the road. It's supposed to mean long life and happiness, but they should probably rethink that.

Geekdom

I've been cruising del.icio.us a lot lately and I have found myself keenly attracted to websites/pages about notetaking. Even though I am not a student. This page made me so excited today: http://lifehacker.com/software/note-taking/geek-to-live-take-studyworthy-lecture-notes-202418.php.

I actually don't use the Cornell method day to day. I use an indexing system like this guy: http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2007/12/05/how-to-take-notes-like-an-alpha-geek-plus-my-2600-date-challenge/.

What a geek!

Cat Lady Syndrome

My dad used to tell me that I would grow up to live in apartment with a cat. That has always scared me because that meant that grownups could see something inside me that was a potential crazy cat lady.

This article in the New York Times increases my fear exponentially:

Cat Lady’ Conundrum, The
By REBECCA SKLOOT
Published: December 9, 2007

Here’s a little-known and slightly terrifying fact: According to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 60 million people in the United States are infected with a parasite that may migrate into their brains and alter their behavior in a way that — among other things — may leave them more likely to be eaten by cats. New research into this common parasite — Toxoplasma gondii — may offer clues to the phenomenon known to the unscientifically-minded as “crazy cat lady” syndrome.

The basic facts: Toxo can infect many species, but it undergoes sexual reproduction only in cat digestive tracts. Once the parasite reproduces, the cat passes it in its feces, where the next unwitting host picks it up by digesting it (intentionally or unintentionally). Then the cycle starts again. In the long run, Toxo must find its way back to a cat’s stomach to survive. So the parasite has evolved a complicated system for taking over its hosts’ brains to increase the likelihood that they’ll be eaten by cats.

How? Scientists are still figuring that out. Research conducted this year by Toxo expert Robert Sapolsky of Stanford, and also by Joanne Webster, professor of parasite epidemiology at Imperial College London, has found that Toxo actually causes rats to become attracted to the smell of cat urine.

Might Toxo explain why some humans develop an unhealthful attraction to cats and apparently become immune to the smell of their urine? And might that explain the mystery of crazy cat ladies? “That idea doesn’t seem completely crazy,” Sapolsky says. “But there’s no data supporting it.”

Not yet. But Jaroslav Flegr, an evolutionary biologist at Charles University in the Czech Republic, is looking into it. He has spent years studying Toxo’s impact on human behavior. (He found, for example, that people infected with Toxo have slower reflexes and are 2.5 times as likely to get into car accidents.) He won’t have results of his study for a while and refuses to speculate. But Joanne Webster says the connection isn’t much of a stretch: “In our evolutionary past, perhaps we were eaten by cats, too,” she says.

US Open 2007

I went to the US Open on Saturday with Diane, Gaby, and Diane's friend Ayat. We watched Sharapova lose to a Polish teenager. It was so sad.
I liked Sharapova's red bloomers. How cute!We also watched Federer give up one match to Isner, who is 6'9". Federer is in the blue and you can tell that Isner is so much taller.

Jury Duty, How GRAND!

I have grand jury duty for two weeks starting today. I kept almost falling asleep today because it was so b o r i n g. We had to learn about the legal system and NARCOTICS. It got interesting when we finally got to see trials. Good part - got out at 3 and went shopping in SoHo on my way home. Bad part - gotta start waking up early so I can go to work for a few hours before heading to court. UGH.

Awkward Boss

So you guys have been asking me about my new job and since I haven't been randomly emailing you all day from work (yet), I wanted to give you a rundown on how things are going.

Desk situation
I've been sharing the desk of the girl that I'm replacing (GTIR) until I'm trained up and she leaves. The IT guy was on vacation last week and is slowly setting her up on a temporary computer so I can finally take over her work station and "make it mine." GTIR is cool - very thorough and professional and we get along fine enough. She commutes from Philly everyday, two hours each way, which I totally don't get. But get this: she's not leaving because of the commute. She's leaving because her boyfriend is transferring to North Carolina and she's going with him. This is actually good for me because she has set the precedence of coming in a little late and leaving a on time. Once she's got her own computer, I'll be online in a flash, setting up my new email, signature, and desktop. I'll keep you posted.

Coworker situation
So in general, my coworkers seem pretty nice. In my department, we are all female and I'm the only one that's married. This is a potential problem, but the girls seem like they have a sense of humor so it should be okay. I think it's kind of weird that our boss is the only male (in marketing) and that no one really snacks.

Boss situation
My boss is awkward. There's no other way to put it. I feel uncomfortable making eye contact with him, but at the same time I have to. And then I feel obligated not to break eye contact. It's painful - and it's only been four days. We have had a few conversations where he asks me how I am and I say good and he smiles and nods and I also smile and nod. Awkward.

He's also kind of weird. We had a company picnic in NJ on Friday and he drove me in his car that has a big magnetic sign on the door advertising his nursery business. When I asked him about it, he didn't really say much. How awkward! When we got to the picnic we had to sign in and he ditched me! You would think that he might want to introduce me around to people, but he ran off like an excited little boy. How awkward!

I guess it might work if he just leaves me alone and loves my work (because what boss hasn't loved my work?).

Drink situation
They keep a fridge stocked with drinks. Yum!

Alright, that's it for now. More updates later.

First Day

Today was my first day at work. My boss took me, the girl I'm replacing, and the girl that reports to me out to lunch. On the way out, I slipped and fell. I tried to get up and slipped and fell again. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

Steam Explosion in NYC

I was walking home to my bus tonight when I got to Lexington Avenue and all hell broke loose. People were running and crying at the same time and all I could see was smoke. I freaked out and started to run uptown, but I kept looking back and I realized that the "smoke" wasn't coming towards me and that it looked too white to be smoke. I turned around and started taking pictures as I walked home.

Culture Shock!

Tony and I just got back from the grocery store. He really wanted to make shake n bake chicken tonight but we couldn't find the shake n bake in our grocery store. We found Japanese bread crumbs and Thai peanut shake n bake, but no good ole fashioned American shake n bake. How weird.

All good things must come to an end

This Monday starts the last week at my current job. Things are really going to suck. I hate the period of time after giving notice and before physically leaving work for the last time. It's so awkward when people come up to me and say, "I heard a nasty rumor!" or "I hear you're leaving!" What am I supposed to say? Well, I've actually been saying, "so long, sucker," but no one seems to think it's funny except me. HAHA

I hate saying goodbye to coworkers, especially the ones that I don't plan on keeping in touch with. I've been debating whether or not I should write a farewell email. Every mass farewell email that I have received has always struck me as cheesy and inauthentic. Goodbye, it's been nice knowing you, but not nice enough to personally give you my contact information. But at the same time, it seems somewhat rude to just leave.

I can tell that this last week is going to suck. I'm going to be busy pretending to work and being helpful while actually NOT being productive. Do you think anyone will notice? The days are really going to drag.

The one thing I will miss - all the product I've been getting. What a bummer.

This Reminds Me of Lisa

A few weekends ago Tony and I went to the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn. We both had so much fun! I saw this tshirt and for some reason it really reminded me of Lisa. I don't know why. It doesn't look like Lisa, but it just made me say "Lisa!!!!!"

This lady makes really cool (in my opinion) "damned dollies." I don't think Tony likes them very much. Here's the
website.

Thank You, Jeff

Dear Jeff,

Thank you for teaching my dear friend Emmy the art of sarcasm.

Emmy was never someone who appreciated (or understood) my sarcasm (I think I am too snarky at times). I would always get blank looks or simply get ignored and it was just too much effort to try to explain why something was funny. That makes things not funny.

And then today Emmy emailed me about something tacky. Except Emmy said, "how tactful, huh?" I responded, "you mean tactless" (because Emmy is also sometimes fobby). No, she said, she was being sarcastic. Emmy! Sarcastic! It's a beautiful thing!

See you soon!

My Weekend

Saturday
- Shopping at the Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale while Tony was at the dentist.
- Experienced a nice slice of New Jersey culture when Tony took me to Seaside Heights AKA "Sleezeside" AKA "the Jersey Shore." You know when people from out of town come and visit and all they want to do is see Hollywood? And when you take them there, they are really disappointed because it's all dirty and there's nothing much to see? That was the Shore. I hear my coworkers get really excited about going to the Shore. Turns out it's a combination of a carnival (the boardwalk), carnival food (fried oreos, funnel cake, and salt water taffy), a dirty beach, and a bunch of gangsta high school kids hanging out. On the plus side: we found an arcade that had Paperboy and the Simpsons which I haven't played since I was a kid!

Sunday
- Wandered around a street fair.
- Serendipitously bumped into the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party and had some delicious ribs and pulled pork sandwich. Also won a water bottle from Snapple and sampled the new Coke with vitamins!
- Sold some books at Book Off!
- Did some spring cleaning.

Montreal

I owe you guys these pictures from our one year anniversary in Montreal. How ironic is it that I complained about the New York snow all winter and we "went away" to the snow. But there was a difference - the snow in Montreal is the snow you have in your dreams: light, fluffy, pretty. The snow in New York is gross.

It was the day before St. Patrick's Day and we were outside waiting for a parade but got a protest instead. We think it was about the war, but weren't really sure since they were speaking French.

Random house with pretty snow.

Poutine! Yum! They had these at every fast food type restaurant. It's french fries covered in curd cheddar cheese and gravy. Delicious!
Local (junk) food.

Heehee! Rue Cypress!
